1. On September 9, 1828, John Wesley Hunt became the first millionaire in Kentucky. His wealth was derived from his successful mercantile business and his founding of the Bank of Kentucky.
2. On September 9, 1861, the Battle of Carnifex Ferry took place near Summersville, West Virginia (which was then part of Virginia). Although not directly in Kentucky, the battle involved Kentucky Union troops fighting against Confederate forces in support of the Union cause.
3. In 1915, on September 9, the Confederate Monument in Covington, Kentucky was dedicated. The monument was erected by the United Daughters of the Confederacy to honor Kentuckians who fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War.
4. On September 9, 1972, the Kentucky Educational Television (KET) network began broadcasting across the state. It was the first statewide public television network in the United States.
5. September 9, 2006 saw the grand opening of the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, Kentucky. The center is a museum and cultural center dedicated to the life and legacy of the famous boxer Muhammad Ali, who was born and raised in Louisville.
