1. In 1993, Nebraska state trooper Marvin E. Vandermyde was shot and killed during a traffic stop near the town of Shelby. The suspect, Michael E. Anderson, was eventually captured and sentenced to life in prison.

2. On September 9, 1854, Nebraska Territory was established by the U.S. Congress. The territory included parts of present-day Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Wyoming.

3. In 1926, the University of Nebraska football team played their first game at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln. The game was against the University of Kansas, and Nebraska won 20-0.

4. On September 9, 1904, the first Nebraska State Fair was held in Lincoln. The fair was originally held to promote agriculture and industry in the state, and it continues to be an annual event to this day.

5. In 1960, Omaha native Chuck Hagel enlisted in the U.S. Army. Hagel would go on to serve in the Vietnam War, and later become a U.S. Senator from Nebraska and the Secretary of Defense under President Barack Obama.
