Can you tell us about yourself?
"Hello. My name is Cheyenne Dear. I'm a teacher here at Quitman upper elementary. I'm a sped teacher and we're located in Quitman, Mississippi. This is my third year here."
Why did you start a career in education?
"I started my education career because I needed, I wanted to be off with my kids in the summer, so I decided to go into the education field so I could have to have that time off with them."
If you could have any other job what would it be and why?
"If I could have any other job, I think it will be nursing because that I just love caring for people."
How are kids different now than 30 years ago?
"Kids are different than 30 years ago. 30 years ago we didn't have technology, we were outside playing. We always communicated we wrote letters and everything like that other than texting and stuff like that today."
How is teaching different now than 30 years ago?
"30 years ago, they were able to teach and not be told what to teach. They taught and they talk from the heart and I just think we learn better."
What would you tell someone who wants to become a teacher?
"What would you tell someone right now that wants to become a teacher? I think I would tell them, make sure it's something you really want to do and something that you really care about and make sure you care about kids. And you do it from the heart."
What is one thing you would change to help kids learn better?
"And one thing I would change to help kids, it's changed being told, take the government out of everything and just let teachers teach. And when teachers can teach, the kids would learn. That's it. Thank you."
