Can you tell us about yourself?

Hello, my name is Lauren Corcoran and I'm at North Ridgeville Academic Center. I teach fifth-grade science and math. I'm a teacher here and have been here for gosh, 18 years.

Why did you start a career in education?

I believe. I started a career in a year in education because I was doing other things while looking at other avenues and it always brought me back to children and working with children and teaching them. So I went and got my master's in education and that's what got me started teaching children.

If you could have any other job what would it be and why?

If I could have another job, what would it be and why? Probably another job I would want would be a pediatrician. And again, still has to do with working with children and trying to do what's best for them, and making them feel better. And that's what I feel I do in school as well.

I think now they're, there's so much more for them to worry about and to think about than they had to, I had to 30 years ago I think students and children, in general, are much more tech-savvy because they have a lot more access to technology.

How is Teaching different now than it was 30 years ago?

Now I have to change the way that I teach in order to be at the student's level to be more engaging and be more exciting for them because they're so used to quick-paced games and I feel that now I have to do that.

What would you tell someone who wants to become a teacher?

You really have to make sure that you're willing to give it your all and, um, put in the time. It's not just something you can go to and, and leave and then go home. I think you take it with you home. You know, besides the physical work, I think you take the emotional part of it home as well.

What would you change to help kids learn better?

And what is one thing I would change to help kids learn better for some students, if I could change, um, maybe their home life and just take them home with me to help them learn better. And also maybe the pressure of constant testing. I would have to say I would have to change to change. I think kids aren't allowed to be kids nowadays anymore. And I would, I would like to change that. Thanks.
