Can you tell us about yourself?
My name is Sherry Whisenhunt. I teach at Kirby school. I'm a kindergarten teacher there and the school is in Arkansas. This year will be my 38th year of teaching kindergarten. Well, not all kindergarten, also taught second grade.
Why did you start a career in education?
I went into teaching because I love children and I loved having the same schedule as my children and my family. I knew I always wanted to be a teacher so I could keep their same schedule as my 3 cents that I had.
If you could have any other job what would it be and why?
I always wanted to be a teacher. And so, it is hard for me to think of anything else. If I do have finished teaching, I would, probably still like to be maybe a substitute teacher, so I continue, could continue to be with, um, children, and help them.
How are kids different now than 30 years ago?
I think children through my 38th year, eight years of teaching and observing them, children have gotten to where, um, they think that they should have everything that makes them happy and maybe it's the entitled age, but I think that we need to concentrate, more on responsibilities and things like that
How is teaching different now than 30 years ago?
Like when I first started teaching, um, how, how has teaching been different? Of course, obviously technology has become a concern, in the very beginning, technology wasn't, near as complicated and not as helpful as it is now, we have so many things that helps us to do things faster and help children better.
What would you tell someone who wants to become a teacher?
I would tell them it is great, but for each individual person, they need to look at the positives and the negatives about going into education. I love the schedule. I love the hours, but they need to remember that we do put in a lot of hours that are not on our contract. So you need to be a hard worker, especially.
What is one thing you would change to help kids learn better?
what, one thing would you change? The main that I've tried every year is to, to help parents understand that they are their child's teacher before they ever come to me in the classroom. I teach kindergarten. So sometimes they think the learning begins when they're five, actually it begins when they're born and the parents are their teachers for the rest of their life, really, but I love teaching and I hope you enjoy my video. Thank you.
