1. Wisconsin becomes a state: On April 1, 1848, Wisconsin officially became the 30th state in the United States. This day is now recognized as Wisconsin Statehood Day.

2. First Wisconsin Capitol building burns down: On April 1, 1904, the first Wisconsin Capitol building, located in Madison, burnt down in a fire. The building was replaced with the current Capitol building, which was completed in 1917.
