1. On April 12, 1894, the University of Montana was founded in Missoula. It started with just six faculty members and 50 students, but has since grown to become one of the largest universities in Montana.
2. In 1933, Rocky Mountain National Park was established in Montana. The park covers over 266,000 acres of land and is home to a diverse range of wildlife including elk, moose, and bighorn sheep.
3. On April 12, 1975, Montana Governor Tom Judge signed the Montana Human Rights Act into law. The act prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, creed, color, sex, age, or mental or physical disability.
4. In 1864, Montana's first newspaper, The Montana Post, was published in Virginia City. The paper was the first to report on the Montana Territory's burgeoning gold rush and became a key source of information for early settlers.
5. On April 12, 1913, the Great Falls Public Library opened its doors to the public. The library was a gift to the city from industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, who funded the construction of hundreds of libraries across the United States during the early 20th century.
