1. On March 2, 1776, the Spanish Lieutenant Governor of New Orleans, Fernando de Leyba, claimed the Missouri area for the Spanish Empire, successfully securing Spanish control over the region.
2. In 1821, Missouri was admitted as the 24th state of the United States on March 2nd, as part of the Missouri Compromise between pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions in Congress.
3. In 1837, on March 2nd, the Missouri legislature passed a bill chartering the Bank of Missouri in St. Louis, providing much-needed financial resources for the growing city.
4. In 1870, the Missouri State Capitol building was completed in Jefferson City on March 2nd, after construction had begun in 1839 but was delayed due to the Civil War.
5. On March 2, 1913, groundbreaking ceremonies were held for the Kansas City Lyric Theater, which would become known as the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, and remains a major cultural institution in the region to this day.
