1. In 1865, the Dakota County Fair was established, making it one of the oldest county fairs in Minnesota. It is still held annually in Farmington, Minnesota.
2. On August 2, 1930, the Minneapolis Aquatennial began. This annual festival celebrates the city's lakes, rivers, and waterways, and includes a variety of events such as boat races, parades, and fireworks.
3. In 1957, the first Polaris snowmobile was produced in Roseau, Minnesota. The company is still headquartered in the state and is a popular manufacturer of snowmobiles, ATVs, and other recreational vehicles.
4. On this day in 1987, the city of Duluth was hit by a storm that caused extensive damage and resulted in 11 deaths. The storm, which came to be known as the "Duluth Campout," was caused by a microburst that produced winds of over 100 miles per hour.
5. August 2, 2007, marked the opening of the iconic Weisman Art Museum on the campus of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. The museum, designed by architect Frank Gehry, features a distinctive metallic exterior and houses a collection of over 24,000 art objects.
