1. In 1864, the Dakota War of 1862 came to an end with the hanging of 38 Dakota men in Mankato. August 8 is recognized as a day of remembrance and reconciliation in Minnesota.
2. The first Minnesota State Fair was held on August 8, 1859. The fair has become an annual tradition and one of the largest state fairs in the country.
3. A tornado outbreak on August 8, 1993 hit parts of central Minnesota, causing widespread damage and several fatalities. It is one of the deadliest tornado outbreaks in state history.
4. On August 8, 1964, the Beatles played their first and only concert in Minnesota at Met Stadium in Bloomington. The concert drew a crowd of over 25,000 fans.
5. In 1946, the first outdoor hockey game in Minnesota was played on August 8 at the University of Minnesota. The game was part of a charity event and featured former and current NHL players.
