1. On August 22, 1922, the state of Delaware held its first mandatory vehicle registration.

2. The Delaware State Fair, one of the oldest and largest fairs in the country, opened on August 22, 1920. It has been held annually in Harrington ever since.

3. On August 22, 1787, the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia voted to approve the final draft of the United States Constitution, which was signed on September 17 of that year. Delaware was the first state to ratify the Constitution on December 7, 1787.

4. The Wilmington Institute Free Library opened to the public on August 22, 1893. The library, now known as the Wilmington Public Library, is still in operation today and has grown to include several branches throughout the city.

5. August 22, 1949 saw the historic adoption of the Delaware State Motto, "Liberty and Independence." The motto replaced the previous motto, "Great Seal of the Delaware State," which had been in use since 1847.
