1. In 1901, the first oil well in Oklahoma was drilled near Bartlesville. The well, known as "Nellie Johnstone No. 1," produced over 4,000 barrels of oil per day, launching Oklahoma's oil industry.
2. In 1927, Oklahoma City's first skyscraper, the 16-story First National Bank Building, opened its doors. The building stood as the tallest in Oklahoma City until the 1970s.
3. On August 22, 1954, Johnny Cash performed at the Tinker Fieldhouse in Oklahoma City, just a few months after his hit song "Hey Porter" was released. Cash would go on to become one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century.
4. In 1979, a severe tornado outbreak struck parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska, causing extensive damage and killing dozens of people. The outbreak was one of the worst in U.S. history, with over 40 tornadoes reported in a single day.
5. On August 22, 2007, Oklahoma City hosted its first WNBA Finals game as the Shock faced off against the Phoenix Mercury. The Shock won the game 77-76, but ultimately lost the series in five games.
