1. In 1777, the Battle of Hubbardton took place in Rutland County, Vermont. This battle was fought during the Revolutionary War and was one of the few battles fought on Vermont soil. American troops, led by General John Stark, successfully defended against the British and German forces.
2. On August 3, 1864, former Vermont Governor and United States Senator Samuel S. Phelps passed away. Phelps served as governor of Vermont from 1872-1874 and was a strong advocate for Vermont's interests in the Senate.
3. In 1921, Burlington, Vermont celebrated the opening of the Flynn Theater. The Flynn was originally built as a movie theater, but in the 1980s it was renovated and became a performing arts center. The Flynn is still a popular destination for concerts, theater productions, and other performances.
4. On August 3, 1950, Vermont Senator Ralph Flanders delivered a speech on the Senate floor condemning Senator Joseph McCarthy's tactics in his anti-communist crusade. Flanders became one of the first Republicans to speak out against McCarthy's tactics and helped to bring an end to the McCarthy Era.
5. In 1978, Vermont Governor Richard A. Snelling signed a law that established the Vermont State Lottery. The lottery was created in order to provide additional revenue for the state's education fund and has been a successful source of funding for Vermont's schools ever since.
