1. The Maryland State Fair began on August 30, 1886, in Timonium, Maryland. The fair is still held annually and is one of the largest agricultural events in the state.

2. On August 30, 1952, the SS United States set a new transatlantic speed record, traveling from Bishop Rock off the southwestern tip of England to Ambrose Light off the coast of New York in just 3 days, 10 hours, 40 minutes. The ship was built in Baltimore and is now docked in Philadelphia.

3. Maryland native, Thurgood Marshall, the first African American to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States, was born on August 30, 1908, in Baltimore. Marshall was a key figure in the Civil Rights movement and argued the landmark case, Brown v. Board of Education, which led to the desegregation of public schools.

4. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, a 23-mile-long structure that connects Virginia Beach to the Eastern Shore of Virginia and Maryland, opened to traffic on August 30, 1964. At the time of its construction, it was the longest bridge-tunnel complex in the world.

5. On August 30, 1813, during the War of 1812, the Battle of Caulk's Field took place near Kent Island in Maryland. The American forces, led by Samuel Cochran, defeated a British detachment that was attempting to attack and destroy the town of Centreville. The battle is commemorated with a historic marker at the site.
