1. In 1833, legendary American General Charles Lee died in Dungeness, Maryland. Lee was a Revolutionary War hero and one of George Washington's most trusted advisors. He was later court-martialed for his conduct during the Battle of Monmouth and dismissed from the army.

2. On August 31, 1895, the Baltimore Orioles baseball team defeated the Louisville Colonels, 11-3. This victory helped propel the Orioles to their first-ever pennant.

3. In 1975, Maryland Governor Marvin Mandel was indicted on charges of racketeering, mail fraud, and extortion. Mandel was eventually found guilty and served 19 months in prison, but was later pardoned by President Ronald Reagan in 1981.

4. On August 31, 1980, the 9th annual Maryland State Fair opened in Timonium. The fair featured a variety of events and attractions, including live music, a petting zoo, and a demolition derby.

5. In 2016, the state of Maryland celebrated the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service with a variety of events and programs. One of the highlights was a special exhibit at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, which explored the history and significance of the Chesapeake Bay.
