1. In 1843, British admiral Richard Thomas oversaw the restoration of Hawaiian sovereignty following an illegal annexation by British sailors led by Lord George Paulet. This day is now known as "Hawaiian Sovereignty Restoration Day."
2. In 1904, Hawaii's first public library was opened in Honolulu. The library was a gift to the people of Hawaii from industrialist Andrew Carnegie.
3. On February 9, 1922, the USS Bowfin was launched from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine. The submarine would later earn eleven battle stars in World War II and is now a museum at Pearl Harbor.
4. In 1942, just two months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, more than 100,000 Japanese Americans were forcibly relocated to internment camps on the mainland. February 9 is now recognized as "Honolulu Day of Remembrance" to honor those affected by the internment.
5. On February 9, 1960, the first Pacific islander to serve as a U.S. Senator was sworn in. Hiram Fong, whose parents were Chinese immigrants from Hawaii, served as a Senator from Hawaii for 17 years.
