1. On January 25, 1893, the Kingdom of Hawaii was overthrown by a group of American businessmen and politicians in what is commonly known as the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom. This led to Hawaii becoming a territory of the United States until it gained statehood in 1959.
2. In 1971, the Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie, Oahu officially opened its doors, showcasing the culture and traditions of the Polynesian islands, including Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, and Fiji.
3. On January 25, 1986, the first flight of the Space Shuttle Challenger since the disastrous Challenger explosion occurred, with Hawaii astronaut Ellison Onizuka serving as a mission specialist. Onizuka was one of seven crew members who tragically lost their lives during the explosion in 1986.
4. In 1996, the USS Missouri Memorial Association was established to oversee the preservation and maintenance of the USS Missouri, the battleship on which the Japanese signed the Instrument of Surrender to end World War II. The USS Missouri is now a popular tourist attraction located in Pearl Harbor.
5. On January 25, 2013, Hawaii became the 15th state in the US to legalize same-sex marriage. The decision was made by a bipartisan vote in the Hawaii State Legislature and was signed into law by Governor Neil Abercrombie.
