3. On this date in 1961, astronaut and New Mexico native Ted Freeman was killed in a T-38 jet crash during a training mission at Ellington Air Force Base. Freeman was part of NASA's third group of astronauts, and had been selected to serve on the Gemini 9 mission.

4. In 1986, the New Mexico State Capitol building in Santa Fe was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The building, which was constructed in the early 20th century, now serves as the seat of the state's government.

5. Finally, on January 20, 2019, the New Mexico Museum of Art opened an exhibit showcasing some of the state's most renowned artists. The exhibit, titled "Visions of the Hispanic World: Treasures from the Hispanic Society Museum and Library," featured a wide range of artworks from the 16th through the 21st century.
