5. On January 26, 1863, Confederate forces were defeated at the Battle of Mill Springs, a key engagement in the ongoing Civil War. The Union victory marked a turning point in the conflict, securing the loyalty of the state of Kentucky to the Union and opening up more opportunities for Union forces to advance into other Confederate-held territories.
