2. On January 27, 1862, Kentucky Governor Beriah Magoffin sent a letter to President Abraham Lincoln urging him to reconsider the Union's policy of prosecuting the Civil War. Magoffin, who sympathized with the Confederacy, argued that the conflict could only be resolved through negotiation and compromise.

3. Legendary jockey Eddie Arcaro, who won five Kentucky Derbies, was born on January 27, 1916, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Arcaro is widely regarded as one of the greatest jockeys in horse racing history, having won 4,779 races during his career.

4. Kentucky native and Hall of Fame pitcher Dazzy Vance was born on January 27, 1891, in Orient, Iowa. Vance began his professional baseball career in the minors, but eventually made his mark in the majors with the Brooklyn Dodgers, earning his only MVP award in 1924.

5. In 1923, the Kentucky General Assembly passed a bill authorizing the creation of what would become Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky. The school was originally known as Murray State Normal School and focused on training teachers for Kentucky's public schools. Today, Murray State offers over 120 degree programs and serves approximately 10,000 students.
