1. In 1885, Nebraska's first African American legislator, Edward Danner, took his seat in the state legislature. Danner was a Baptist minister and teacher who advocated for equal rights for all Nebraskans, including African Americans.

2. In 1890, the first state capital building in Lincoln was destroyed by fire. The building was still under construction at the time and the cause of the fire remains unknown. The current state capital building was completed in 1932.

3. In 1916, the Nebraska State Historical Society was founded. The society's mission is to collect, preserve, and share Nebraska's history and cultural heritage. Today, the society operates the Nebraska History Museum, the Gerald R. Ford Conservation Center, and the Nebraska State Records Center and Archives.

4. In 1942, the US Army opened Camp Kearney in Kearney, Nebraska. The camp served as a training center for soldiers during World War II and was home to more than 20,000 men at its peak. After the war, the camp was closed and the land was turned over to the University of Nebraska-Kearney.

5. In 2013, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Huskers women's volleyball team won their fourth national championship. The team, coached by John Cook, defeated the University of Texas Longhorns in the final match of the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Tournament. The Huskers have since gone on to win two more national championships in 2015 and 2017.
