1. In 1804, the first town meeting in the town of Falmouth (now Portland) was held on July 11th. Falmouth was incorporated as a town in 1718 and later changed its name to Portland in 1786.

2. On July 11, 1861, the 12th Maine Regiment was mustered into service during the Civil War. The regiment saw action in several major battles, including Antietam and Gettysburg.

3. In 1920, a fierce thunderstorm hit the town of Madawaska on July 11th, causing the St. John River to overflow its banks and flood the town. The flood caused extensive damage to homes and businesses, but no fatalities were reported.

4. On July 11, 1937, the Maine Medical Center in Portland opened its doors for the first time. Today, the hospital is the largest medical center in northern New England and has been recognized as one of the top hospitals in the country.

5. In 1970, Governor Kenneth Curtis signed a bill legalizing abortion in the state of Maine on July 11th. Maine was one of the first states to legalize abortion after the landmark Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade.
