1. In 1935, the first automatic toll collection machine was installed on the Bronx–Whitestone Bridge, which connects the New York City boroughs of Queens and the Bronx. This allowed for greater efficiency in traffic flow and reduced wait times for drivers.

2. In 1958, the first ever American Express credit card was issued to a resident of New York City. The company had previously only offered charge cards, and the new credit card quickly became a popular alternative.

3. On July 29, 1977, a massive blackout caused by lightning struck New York City, plunging much of the city into darkness for approximately 25 hours. This event led to widespread looting and arson in some areas, but also showcased the resilience and community spirit of many New Yorkers.

4. In 1981, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) launched a new subway line in New York City, the BMT Canarsie Line. This line, now known as the L train, serves many neighborhoods in Brooklyn and has become an integral part of the city's transit system.

5. On July 29, 2016, the final segment of the Second Avenue Subway in Manhattan was approved for construction. This new subway line, which officially opened on January 1, 2017, provides a much-needed alternative to the congested Lexington Avenue line and has greatly improved transportation options on the East Side of Manhattan.
