1. In 1903, the town of Carnegie, Oklahoma was established. Named after wealthy industrialist Andrew Carnegie, the town was located in the heart of Carnegie's oil fields.
2. On July 30, 1932, the first oil well was drilled in the town of Mannford, Oklahoma. The well produced oil at a rate of 300 barrels per day and helped to establish the town's importance as an oil producing community.
3. In 1977, Oklahoma governor David Boren signed a bill into law designating the "Oklahoma Rose" as the state flower. The rose was chosen for its beauty and its ability to thrive in Oklahoma's climate.
4. On July 30, 2008, Oklahoma native and former University of Oklahoma football coach, Barry Switzer, was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Switzer led the OU Sooners to three national championships during his tenure as head coach.
5. In 2013, the Oklahoma City Thunder basketball team signed guard Reggie Jackson to a four-year contract extension. Jackson had played a key role in helping the Thunder reach the NBA Finals the previous season and was viewed as a rising star in the league.
