1. On June 1, 1796, Tennessee became the 16th state to join the United States. Originally part of North Carolina, the area now encompassing Tennessee was ceded to the federal government in 1789 and was admitted as a state seven years later.

2. The famed Battle of Atlanta began on June 1, 1864 during the American Civil War. The battle was a major engagement in General Sherman's Atlanta Campaign and led to the eventual capture of the city by Union forces in September of that year.

3. Georgia native and baseball legend Ty Cobb made his major-league debut on June 1, 1905. Cobb went on to become one of the greatest hitters in the history of the sport, setting numerous records during his career and becoming part of the inaugural class of inductees into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

4. Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, which consistently ranks as the world's busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic, opened on June 1, 1956. The airport is named for former Atlanta mayor William Hartsfield and former Georgia governor and senator William Jackson.

5. On a lighter note, June 1 is also National Donut Day, which dates back to 1938 when the Salvation Army began serving donuts to soldiers during World War I. The day is now celebrated annually with free donut giveaways and special promotions at donut shops and bakeries around the country.
