1. In 1865, Union General William T. Sherman arrived in Atlanta, Georgia, where he had forced Confederate General John B. Hood to evacuate the city the previous year. After the Civil War ended, Sherman went on a nationwide tour, and his arrival in Atlanta marked his return to the city that he had famously captured in 1864.

2. In 1903, the Georgia State Capitol building, which had been under construction since 1884, was dedicated in Atlanta. The building is made of Georgia marble and features the famous gold dome that can be seen from miles away. It remains an important symbol of Georgia's government and history.

3. In 1919, Georgia ratified the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which gave women the right to vote. Georgia was the first state in the Deep South to ratify the amendment, and it played an important role in the fight for women's suffrage in the United States.

4. In 1962, Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport opened for business. The airport is now one of the busiest in the world and serves as a major hub for Delta Air Lines. In 2021, the airport was renamed Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in honor of former Atlanta mayor Maynard Jackson.

5. In 2005, the Atlanta Braves retired the jersey of legendary pitcher Greg Maddux during a ceremony at Turner Field. Maddux had won three Cy Young Awards and helped lead the Braves to several division titles and a World Series championship in 1995. He remains one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history and is now a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame.
