1. Vermont was the first state to abolish slavery.
On June 1, 1777, Vermont became the first state to abolish slavery in its constitution, nearly 90 years before the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution. However, it should be noted that there were still enslaved people in Vermont until gradual abolition laws were passed in 1793 and 1840.

2. The first ski tow in America was installed in Vermont.
On June 1, 1933, the first ski tow in America was installed at Gilbert's Hill in Woodstock, Vermont. It was powered by an old Ford Model T engine and could pull skiers up the hill at a rate of 200 feet per minute.

3. Vermont legalized same-sex marriage.
On June 1, 2009, Vermont became the fourth state in the United States to legalize same-sex marriage, following Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Iowa. The bill was signed into law by Governor Jim Douglas.

4. Vermont's battle flag was adopted.
On June 1, 1837, the Vermont Legislature adopted the state's battle flag, which features the state seal surrounded by a wreath of red clover. The flag was used in the Civil War and is still used today by Vermont National Guard units.

5. The Vermont State House was completed.
On June 1, 1859, the current Vermont State House in Montpelier was completed. It replaced the previous wooden State House, which had burned down in 1857. The new building was designed by architect Thomas Silloway and is now a National Historic Landmark.
