1. On June 16, 1828, the first steam-powered vessel in Maine, the "Bangor," launched in the Penobscot River. This event was a significant milestone in the state's transportation history, as steam-powered ships became an essential mode of travel and trade for Maine's coastal communities.

2. In 1863, on June 16, the Battle of Gettysburg began in Pennsylvania, becoming one of the most significant military engagements of the American Civil War. More than 3,000 Maine soldiers fought in the battle, and over 200 of them lost their lives.

5. On June 16, 2016, the Maine state legislature passed a bill allowing terminally ill patients to seek medical aid in dying. The law, which went into effect later that year, allowed patients with less than six months to live to request medication to end their life peacefully and with dignity. Maine joined a handful of other states in passing such a law.
