1. On June 30, 1854, Fort Pierre was established in what is now Stanley County. The fort was named after Pierre Chouteau Jr., a fur trader and prominent figure in the North American fur trade.
2. In 1898, the town of Martin, located in Bennett County, was incorporated on June 30th. It was named after Martin Mattice, a prominent businessman in the area at the time.
3. In 1913, the first flight over South Dakota took place on June 30th. The flight was made by an aviator named Roland Garros who flew from Aberdeen to Watertown.
4. On June 30, 1932, the town of Wentworth was destroyed by a tornado. The tornado caused extensive damage and resulted in the deaths of two people.
5. In 1947, the South Dakota State Capitol in Pierre was dedicated on June 30th. The building was designed by architect Bertram G. Goodhue and is recognized as one of the most beautiful state capitol buildings in the United States.
