1. On June 4, 1964, civil rights workers Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman, and James Chaney were reported missing in Neshoba County, Mississippi. They were later found murdered by members of the Ku Klux Klan.
2. In 1921, the city of Meridian, Mississippi was struck by a deadly tornado on June 4. The tornado destroyed much of the downtown area, killing 35 people and injuring hundreds more.
3. On June 4, 1970, former Mississippi Governor Ross Barnett died at the age of 78. Barnett was known for his staunch resistance to the civil rights movement, including his efforts to prevent the integration of the University of Mississippi in 1962.
4. The Mississippi Braves, a minor league baseball team, played their first game on June 4, 2005. The team is based in Pearl, Mississippi, and is affiliated with the Atlanta Braves.
5. On June 4, 1915, a train collision occurred in Vaughan, Mississippi that killed 37 people and injured dozens more. The accident was caused by a signal failure, and is considered one of the deadliest train wrecks in U.S. history.
