1. In 1680, the Pueblo Revolt began in New Mexico. The Pueblo Indians, led by Popé, rose up against the Spanish colonizers, killing hundreds and driving them out of the area.

2. In 1776, the first European settlement was established in New Mexico at San Juan Pueblo by Don Juan de Oñate.

3. On June 9, 1912, New Mexico officially became the 47th state in the United States of America. The capital city of Santa Fe became the state capital.

4. In 1943, the Los Alamos National Laboratory was established in New Mexico as part of the Manhattan Project, the effort to develop the first atomic bomb.

5. On June 9, 1996, the largest wildfire in New Mexico history, the Las Conchas Fire, began in the Jemez Mountains. It burned over 157,000 acres and destroyed more than 60 structures.
