1. On March 13, 1781, the city of Las Vegas, New Mexico was founded by Mexican settlers. It served as a stopover point on the Santa Fe Trail and was a prominent trading center for Native American tribes and early pioneers.

2. The Battle of Apache Pass took place on March 13, 1861, during the American Civil War. Confederate forces under Brig. Gen. H.H. Sibley attacked Union troops stationed at Apache Pass, but were repelled after a three-day siege.
