1. Wyoming was officially declared a state on March 2, 1890. It was the 44th state to join the Union and the last state to be admitted before the turn of the century.

2. On March 2, 1877, the first woman in Wyoming was elected to a political office. Esther Morris was appointed the justice of the peace in South Pass City, making her the first woman in United States history to hold a political office.

3. The worst blizzard in Wyoming's history occurred on March 2, 1905. The storm brought winds up to 70 miles per hour, dropping temperatures to -27 degrees Fahrenheit, and leaving behind over 3 feet of snow.

4. On March 2, 1895, Laramie hosted one of the earliest women's basketball games in history. The University of Wyoming women's team played against the Colorado University women's team in front of an excited crowd.

5. In 1927, the Cheyenne Board of Education established March 2 as "Read Across America Day" in honor of beloved children's author, Dr. Seuss's birthday. The tradition still continues today in many schools across Wyoming and the country as a day to celebrate reading.
