1. In 1819, the first charter for a public school was granted in Lexington, Kentucky. The school, named Transylvania University, would go on to become one of the most highly esteemed institutions of higher education in the state, and is still in operation today.

2. On March 20, 1899, a group of African-American residents of Paducah, Kentucky formed the Colored Commercial Club, which was aimed at promoting the economic and social advancement of black citizens in the city. The club later changed its name to the Paducah Negro Business League, and was affiliated with the national movement founded by Booker T. Washington.

3. In 1948, Kentucky native and future Academy Award-winning actor Ned Beatty was born in Louisville. Beatty went on to appear in a number of iconic films, including "Deliverance," "Superman," and "Network," and was widely respected for his versatile and nuanced performances.

4. In 1982, the Kentucky Wildcats men's basketball team won the NCAA championship, defeating the Georgetown Hoyas in the final game. The championship was the Wildcats' seventh overall, and marked the first time they had won since legendary coach Adolph Rupp retired in 1972.

5. On March 20, 2000, the Kentucky Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling in the case of Rose v. Council for Better Education, which held that the state's system of public education was unconstitutional due to its failure to provide an adequate level of funding for schools. The decision spurred significant reforms in Kentucky's education system, including the creation of a new funding formula and the establishment of a statewide assessment program.
