1. In 1793, Spanish explorer Francisco de Vargas declared the land around the Rio Grande the property of Spain, officially establishing the boundary of New Mexico. This declaration would eventually lead to the incorporation of New Mexico as a territory of the United States in 1850.

2. On March 26, 1850, the U.S. Congress passed the Organic Act, which established the Territory of New Mexico. This act provided for the establishment of a territorial government and the appointment of a governor, secretary, judges, and other officials.

3. In 1887, the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway completed its line to Albuquerque, bringing increased economic growth and population to the city. This was a significant event in the development of New Mexico's railroad industry and helped to cement Albuquerque as a major transportation hub in the Southwest.

4. On March 26, 1917, New Mexico Congressman Albert B. Fall became the first person from the state to serve in a U.S. president's cabinet when he was appointed as Secretary of the Interior by President Woodrow Wilson. Fall is perhaps best known for his involvement in the Teapot Dome Scandal, which involved the illegal leasing of federal oil reserves.

5. In 2009, the New Mexico Senate passed a resolution declaring March 26th as New Mexico Small Business Development Center Day. This day recognizes the important role that small businesses play in the state's economy and the contributions of the New Mexico Small Business Development Centers in supporting small business growth and development.
