1. Louisiana Statehood: On May 14, 1812, Louisiana officially became the 18th state in the United States after being established as a territory in 1803.
2. Steamboat Racing: In 1870, the first steamboat race on the Mississippi River took place between iconic steamboats Robert E. Lee and Natchez, both of which were built in Louisiana. The Robert E. Lee won the race from New Orleans to St. Louis, clocking in at an impressive three days, 18 hours, and 14 minutes.
3. Hurricane Andrew: On May 14, 1992, Hurricane Andrew, a category 5 storm, made landfall in southern Louisiana causing significant damage and loss of life. It is considered the most destructive hurricane to hit Louisiana since Hurricane Betsy in 1965.
4. Aviation Milestone: In 1912, the first airplane flight over the city of New Orleans occurred, piloted by Eugene Ely, who flew over the city for about 7 minutes.
5. Jazz Pioneer: Legendary jazz musician, Fats Waller, was born on May 14, 1904, in New York City. Although not born in Louisiana, Waller's music was heavily influenced by the New Orleans jazz scene and he frequently performed in the state throughout his career.
