2. The infamous “Battle of Las Vegas” occurred on May 23, 1899, between two rival factions of the city’s government. The melee, which took place in front of the Bird Cage Theatre, resulted in 3 deaths and prompted the governor to declare martial law.

3. May 23, 1905, saw the opening of the Golden Nugget Casino in downtown Las Vegas. Originally a small gambling hall, it grew over time to become one of the city’s most iconic casinos.
