1. In 1912, the Lincoln Highway Association was founded in Detroit, Michigan, with the goal of creating the first transcontinental highway in the United States. The highway would eventually pass through South Dakota.

2. In 1935, the Rural Electrification Administration was established as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal program. The program aimed to bring electricity to rural areas of the United States, including South Dakota.

3. In 1966, the Pioneer Auto Show opened in Murdo, South Dakota. The museum features a collection of vintage cars and other Americana artifacts.

4. In 1980, Mount St. Helens in Washington state erupted, causing widespread damage and loss of life. The ash from the eruption reached as far as South Dakota.

5. In 2017, President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the Department of the Interior to review national monument designations made under the Antiquities Act. This included the Bears Ears National Monument in Utah, which is considered sacred land by several Native American tribes, including the Oglala Sioux of South Dakota.
