1. In 1868, the Treaty of Fort Laramie was signed between the United States government and the Sioux Nation. This treaty established the Great Sioux Reservation, which included most of present-day South Dakota.

2. In 1927, American pilot Charles Lindbergh made a stop in Sioux Falls during his famous solo flight from New York to Paris. Thousands of people gathered to see his plane, the Spirit of St. Louis, and to catch a glimpse of the famous aviator.

3. On May 26, 1934, the famous outlaw duo Bonnie and Clyde were killed in Louisiana. While this event did not directly involve South Dakota, the two infamous criminals had frequently traveled through the state during their crime spree in the early 1930s.

4. In 1973, the American Indian Movement (AIM) occupied the small town of Wounded Knee on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. The 71-day siege was a protest against the federal government's treatment of Native Americans and ended in a standoff with law enforcement.

5. In 2019, a rare T-Rex skeleton named Stan was sold at auction for over $31 million. The fossil had been discovered by a South Dakota rancher in 1987 and is now on display at the Black Hills Institute of Geological Research in Hill City.
