1) The first tribal land of the Delaware Indians was purchased by the English on May 28, 1688. The land was located in what is now Burlington County, NJ and was purchased for a total of 1,200 pounds.
2) On May 28, 1830, the Delaware and Raritan Canal was opened for business. The canal connected the Delaware River to the Raritan River and was used to transport goods throughout New Jersey.
3) The Jersey Central Power & Light Company was established on May 28, 1903. The energy company is now a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. and provides electricity to over 1 million customers in New Jersey.
4) May 28, 1965 marked the opening of the Garden State Parkway’s second toll plaza in Galloway Township, NJ. The toll plaza is still in operation today and is one of 17 plazas along the Garden State Parkway.
5) New Jersey’s first female governor, Christine Todd Whitman, was sworn into office on May 28, 1994. Whitman served two terms as governor and later went on to serve as the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency under President George W. Bush.
