1. In 1848, Michigan became the first state to abolish the death penalty, making it a milestone in the state's history. The state suspended the death penalty again in 1963 and abolished it altogether in 2021, becoming the 23rd state to do so.
2. In 1917, the Michigan State Police was created as a part of the Michigan Department of State. The department was created in response to public outcry over lawlessness and crime in rural areas of the state.
3. In 1921, Michigan opened the Mackinac Bridge, a suspension bridge that connects the Upper Peninsula to the Lower Peninsula. The bridge is a symbol of engineering excellence and has become an icon of Michigan.
4. In 1967, the Detroit Tigers played their first game at Tiger Stadium. The stadium, located in Detroit, was home to the Tigers until it was demolished in 2009 and replaced with a new stadium, Comerica Park.
5. In 2018, Michigan voters approved a ballot initiative legalizing the recreational use of marijuana in the state. Michigan became the tenth state in the United States to legalize marijuana for recreational use.
