1. Utah became the 45th state in the United States on May 4, 1896. After a long and contentious battle for statehood, Utah was finally granted statehood by President Grover Cleveland.
2. On May 4, 1869, the final spike of the First Transcontinental Railroad was driven into the ground at Promontory Summit, Utah. This event connected the east and west coasts of the United States by rail for the first time in history.
3. May 4, 1983, was designated as "Utah Centennial Day" and celebrated 100 years of statehood. Festivities included a parade, fireworks, and a commemorative ceremony at the State Capitol building.
4. Major League Baseball's Salt Lake Bees played their first game at Franklin Quest Field in Salt Lake City on May 4, 1994. The team has since moved to Smith's Ballpark but continues to be a favorite among Utah baseball fans.
5. In 2007, the LDS Church announced the construction of a new temple in Payson, Utah, on May 4th. The Payson Utah Temple was dedicated on June 7, 2015, and serves as a sacred place for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the area.
