1. In 1765, North Carolina governor William Tryon signed a proclamation calling for a day of thanksgiving to commemorate the repeal of the Stamp Act, a controversial law imposed on the colonies by the British government. This marked one of the earliest known Thanksgiving celebrations in North Carolina.

2. On November 12, 1863, the Confederate army attempted to seize control of Knoxville, Tennessee, which was an important transportation hub for the Union army during the Civil War. The ensuing battle, known as the Battle of Fort Sanders, was a decisive Union victory, and it effectively ended Confederate hopes of regaining control of Tennessee.

3. In 1932, the first installment of the North Carolina Symphony debuted in Raleigh. The group was originally known as the North Carolina Symphony Society, and it was created as part of a broader effort to promote music and culture throughout the state.

4. On November 12, 1965, the U.S. Army Sergeant Jon Cavaiani was captured by the North Vietnamese army during the Vietnam War. Cavaiani spent more than two years as a prisoner of war before being released in 1973. He later received the Medal of Honor for his bravery and service during the war.

5. In 2016, North Carolina governor Pat McCrory conceded the state's gubernatorial race to his Democratic challenger, Roy Cooper. The election had been hotly contested and controversial, with accusations of voter suppression and other irregularities. Cooper became the first Democrat to be elected governor of North Carolina since 2008.
