1. In 1739, the Stono Rebellion, one of the most significant slave uprisings in American history, occurred on November 13 in what is now South Carolina. It was led by enslaved Africans who were mostly from the Kongo region and wanted to escape to Spanish Florida, where they believed they would have more freedom. The rebellion was suppressed by the South Carolina militia, and more than 50 slaves were killed.
