1. In 1715, the Yamasee War began in South Carolina, as Native American tribes attacked colonists along the coast. The conflict lasted for over a year and resulted in the defeat of the Yamasee and the near-destruction of several other tribes.

2. On November 14, 1780, the Battle of Fishdam Ford occurred during the American Revolutionary War. General Thomas Sumter led a Patriot force against a British unit commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton. Although Sumter's men were outnumbered, they successfully repelled the British and forced them to retreat.

3. In 1831, the nation's first steam locomotive made its debut in South Carolina. Known as the "Best Friend of Charleston," the locomotive was built in England and shipped to Charleston, where it quickly became a popular mode of transportation.

4. On November 14, 1862, the Confederate Army under General John C. Pemberton was defeated by Union forces commanded by General Ulysses S. Grant at the Battle of Corinth in Mississippi. The battle marked a significant turning point in the Civil War, as the Union gained control of key transportation routes in the region.

5. In 1947, the South Carolina Highway Patrol was established to enforce traffic laws and provide assistance to motorists. Today, the Highway Patrol is responsible for ensuring the safety of the state's highways and has a presence in all 46 counties.
