1. In 1784, the city of Louisville was officially established as a town by the Virginia General Assembly. Originally named "Louisville" after King Louis XVI of France, the town would eventually become one of the largest cities in the United States.

2. In 1863, during the American Civil War, the Battle of Lookout Mountain took place near Chattanooga, Tennessee. A regiment of Kentuckians fought on the Union side in the battle and helped secure a key victory for the North.

3. In 1908, the Western Kentucky State Normal School (now Western Kentucky University) was established in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The school's original mission was to train teachers for the state's rural schools.

4. In 1971, the Kentucky Educational Television (KET) network went on the air for the first time. KET was the first statewide educational television network in the United States.

5. In 2006, the Kentucky Wildcats football team defeated the Tennessee Volunteers 17-12 in Knoxville, Tennessee. The victory gave Kentucky its first win over Tennessee in 22 years and helped the Wildcats finish the season with an 8-5 record.
