1. 1792 - Kentucky becomes the 15th state in the United States of America. On November 25, Kentucky was officially granted statehood after being a part of Virginia since 1776. The state was named after the Kentucky River and is known as the Bluegrass State.
2. 1864 - The Battle of Franklin, one of the bloodiest conflicts of the Civil War, took place in Tennessee. Many Kentucky soldiers fought in the battle, including the famous "Orphan Brigade" which was made up of Kentuckians who fought for the Confederacy.
3. 1936 - A historic flood devastated Louisville, Kentucky. The Ohio River swelled to a record height of 57.1 feet, causing widespread damage and displacement. The flood is often referred to as the "Great Flood of 1937" due to the fact that it began in December of 1936 and lasted into the early months of 1937.
4. 1949 - Baseball Hall of Famer Pee Wee Reese, born in Ekron, Kentucky, was named National League MVP. Reese played shortstop for the Brooklyn Dodgers and was a 10-time All-Star.
5. 2007 - President George W. Bush pardoned 14 individuals, including a couple from Kentucky. The couple, who had been convicted of corrupting a city government, were pardoned after serving five years in prison.
