1) On November 25, 1927, the worst school disaster in American history occurred when a natural gas explosion destroyed the Consolidated School in Bath, West Virginia. The explosion killed 38 students and four teachers.
2) On November 25, 1864, Union forces led by General William Averell engaged in a fierce battle with Confederate forces at the Battle of New Creek (now Keyser, WV). The Union forces ultimately emerged victorious and were able to secure the strategically important B&O Railroad.
3) On November 25, 1960, the Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs, WV opened a massive underground bunker designed to house members of the U.S. Congress and other high-level officials in the event of a nuclear attack. The bunker remained in operation until its existence was revealed in the 1990s.
4) On November 25, 1778, American revolutionary hero and Virginia Governor Patrick Henry led a militia force into present-day West Virginia to confront a Shawnee raiding party. The raiders ultimately fled, and Henry's forces were able to secure important supplies and livestock.
5) On November 25, 1858, the Wheeling Intelligencer became the first daily newspaper published in West Virginia. The paper would go on to become one of the most prominent and influential newspapers in the state's history.
