1. 1731: The first synagogue in Rhode Island was established in Newport. Touro Synagogue still stands today and is a National Historic Site.

2. 1775: Rhode Island Governor Joseph Wanton called for the formation of two battalions to fight in the American Revolution. The first regiment was composed of African American soldiers.

3. 1942: The Newport Naval Training Station was established during World War II. The base trained over 100,000 sailors before it closed in 1973.

4. 1969: The Rhode Island Convention Center Authority was created, with the goal of building a convention center in Providence. The center opened in 1993 and has hosted numerous events and conventions.

5. 2007: The Providence Bruins ice hockey team set a new American Hockey League record by winning their 10th straight game in a single season. The team went on to reach the playoffs that year.
