1. In 1933, the Rhode Island State Police was created by an act of the state legislature. Prior to this, law enforcement in Rhode Island was handled by local city and town police departments.

2. On November 28, 1961, the "Great Thanksgiving Day Snowstorm" hit Rhode Island, dumping over a foot of snow and causing widespread power outages. The storm resulted in several fatalities and caused millions of dollars in damage.

3. In 1675, the Great Swamp Fight took place in what is now South Kingstown, Rhode Island. The battle was part of King Philip's War, and resulted in the defeat of the Narragansett tribe by a combined force of English colonists and Native American allies.

4. On November 28, 1783, the first recorded flight in Rhode Island took place. A Frenchman named Jean-Pierre Blanchard flew a hot-air balloon from the East Side of Providence to a field in Cumberland.

5. On November 28, 1794, the Touro Synagogue in Newport, Rhode Island was dedicated. It is the oldest synagogue building still standing in the United States, and is a National Historic Site.
